Elihu Burritt correspondence and writings, 1841-1873.

Letters and essays or lectures written by Elihu Burritt, peace activist, philanthropist and abolitionist who was born in New Britain, Connecticut. The earliest letter, 1841, accepted an invitation to give a lecture in Worcester, Massachusetts. All but one of his 1855 letters were addressed to Emma, a friend he met in England, and were posted from London and later New Britain. An 1871 letter to the New York Independent asked where the article was that he had written about an International Exchange of Pulpits. The other letters concern additional lectures in various locations. The two lectures were about peace, international cooperation, and the horrors of war. One is entitled "The Constitutional Unity of Christian and the Natural Bonds of Brotherhood" which was written about 1847.
